Just look at that beautiful, whimsic cover! I will often buy a book because of a lovely cover and I purchased "The Golem and the Jinni" for that exact reason a few months ago. I finally decided to read the book and instead of inhaling a novel like I usually do, I'm taking my time, savoring the lush language of Wecker's storytelling. After only a week, I'm only about halfway through the novel and I'm enjoying the world it is transporting me to.
The novel is a historical fantasy, if you will, taking place in New York in 1899. Both the Golem and Jinni are mythological creatures who have found themselves in human form without a master. Two beings who are usually created to serve are now adrift, having free will. The story of the Golem and the Jinni is definitely an allegory for our world, how we can often feel adrift when our options are plentiful. We often walk the line of choosing to do what is right and what our hearts desires.
After I finish "The Golem & The Jinni", it's back to reading for work, which is always a pleasure, but reading a book just because I want to get lost in a story is my heart's desire.
