UNIT OBJECTIVES
Read and understand the play “Romeo and Juliet” in order to examine why Shakespeare’s play is still read today, by comparing different versions of the play, specifically a graphic novel, the 1996 movie, and a live performance. Students will explore how the three different mediums present themes and symbols found in the text and will show knowledge by presenting a craft project as well as a response to literature.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
1. How does each version of R&J reflect the time period/culture the characters live in?
2. What timeless themes are found in literature?
3. How does the medium for each text change how the story of R&J is told?

THE ASSESSMENT
After we view the movie, the play, and the graphic novel, you will display your knowledge by:
- Creating and presenting a hanging 3D Venn Diagram of your focused theme from Romeo & Juliet, displaying how all three mediums interpreted and presented that theme. Your diagram must be colorful, interesting and use a mixture of symbols and words. (see example below)
- Writing a paper that explains your 3D Venn Diagram, highlighting one similarity and one difference among the 3 mediums, and providing 2 examples from the text.
