Unit 3 Reader's Journal
For your nightly readings, I would like you to do the following:
A) Highlight passages that have meaning to you, or that you find are important to the meaning of the story.
B)Do a Double Entry journal. On the left side of your page, place a quote from the book that had meaning to you. Remember to cite the text!! On the right side of the page, write a brief reflection on why the quote had meaning to you.
Below is an example of how your journal should look.

“My brain exploded into a million thoughts and only one thought at the same time –
please don’t kill me.” (23) “That was my role; the dutiful son, the All American boy with an All-American fifteen foot deadeye jump shot and an All American 3.5 GPA.” (27) “What they see is what he presents. And it sounds like he presented himself as just another…” (49) “I mean, I had seen this happen so many times. Not personally, but on TV. In the news. People getting beaten, and sometimes killed, by the cops, and then there’s all this fuss about it, only to build up to a big heartbreak when nothing happens. The cops get off. And everybody cries and waits for the next dead kid, to do it all over again.” (59) |
Rashad’s thoughts as he is being pummeled by the cop just breaks my heart. He is so scared that he is going to die and no kid should ever feel that way by folks who are supposed to protect us.
What is an All American? I know what images the media puts out, but can’t I be All American too? While I think Rashad’s dad is being a total jerk right now, I do remember my mom saying the same thing that I always must look presentable when going out so people would think well of me. This passage is speaking mad truth, sadly. Same story every single time. |
