I ended up not finishing City of Ashes because one of the main characters became tiresome for me and I just didn't want read about his stupid antics anymore. Clare also used a number of annoying character tropes and those turned me off of the book as well. Because I bought the books on sale, I don't have buyer's remorse, but I also have absolutely no desire to finish the series. Sorry guys, the Mortal Instruments Series is just not for me.
Instead I read "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" after a student shared that a family member felt the book was too graphic. Curious, I borrowed the book and well, the family member was right. This does not make it a bad book though. I really enjoyed the novel, the characters, the language the author used, and found the novel to be extremely touching. It handles mental illness with deft and care that allows for the reader to understand young Charlie's mind and connect with him. Charlie is very frank and honest with his experiences which is where the graphicness (yes, it's a word I just made up) comes in. I know a number of other students are reading the book and if you feel like it is too much, you may chose a different book, but if you can handle the subject matter, then keep reading. Your heart will both break and cheer for Charlie at the end.
So, the question is...what am I reading now? As I told you guys on Friday, I'm going to show you how I review a novel. I'm starting Kendare Blake's new book, Antigoddess, which is the beginning of her new series called "The Goddess War". I don't know much about the author or her writing style, so I'm going into this novel with an open slate, the way I like to be when I review a book. That way, I can evaluate the book without having prejudices and can really examine/analyze the book entirely for its merit.
I'll let you all know next week what I think.
