Some of my MFA classmates and I have decided that we're going to have a monthly book discussion and our first one was this past Sunday. Our first book, Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward, which is a National Book Award winner.
The novel is set in Mississippi in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina and briefly deals with the aftermath of the storm. The novel is raw, touching, intense at points and a story that highlights the thoughts and decisions of the people who chose to not leave the area before Katrina.
Salvage the Bones was not an easy read, meaning you have to pay attention to the story, but it was a good one. I had a great discussion with my friends yesterday and recommend this novel.

I started David Levithan's Every Day last night and if I didn't have to work today, I would have stayed up all night reading it. It is just that good.
The story revolves around the character named A, who wakes up every day in a different body. He could be a boy or a girl, a different ethnicity, a different body shape. He has committed himself to not getting involved in the lives of the people whose body he is inhabiting, but that all changes one day when he meets Rhihannon. The consequences from that decision are catastrophic.
I can't wait to see what twists and turns this book has in store.
